What to do on the third Thursday in April

It’s easy to get caught up in the hype surrounding National High Five Day. If you find yourself getting carried away, it is best to simply extend your outstretched hand to the next stranger who walks by, and repeat until the High Five is reciprocated. Then move on. Repeat.

If you have the time and resources, you can use our tactic from college of setting up a stand in a highly trafficed area, and distributing free lemonade to the passersby. Encourage these lemonade swilling freeloaders to exchange High Fives with yourself, and anyone they might meet. Expect to hear lots of “So what’d you put in there?” comments from your sarcastic/legitimately nervous fellow students. NOTE: This has only been done on a college campus. That DOES NOT mean that it should not be performed in a highly trafficked metropolitan center. If you do set up a Lemonade stand on 8th and Forty Deuce, send us your anecdote.

Countless tables will be set up on campuses all across the country on the third Thursday in April. If you want to set up your own, here are some guidelines: Put it in a well trafficked area. Nothing is sadder than a bunch of people with no high fives to give. Provide some sort of incentive other than the high five to rope in unsuspecting people. Lemonade is recommended, it is best to assure people that there is “No Catch.” Once they’ve guzzled their fill, their spirits will be lifted, and chances of high fiving are greatly increased. A boombox loudly playing any of the recommended soundtracks of current and past years is also a necessity.
